The research focus “Smart Building Envelopes” deals with alternative solutions for new constructions, renovation, and densification, based on the premises of resilience, efficiency, comfort and usability. Traditional Alpine construction was marked by resource scarcity, local building materials, and low energy supply. The resulting construction principles are newly interpreted with modern construction means in active, passive and adaptive building envelopes, especially via prefabrication, modular construction and the adapted use of established and innovative building materials.
Envelope-integrated systems will complement a building envelope’s traditional safety and service functions in a smart way, e.g. with daylight technology, a (semi-)autonomous heating and cooling supply, envelope-integrated solar energy and using the structural envelope for thermal energy storage.
