Background

Our client aims to establish a stronger presence in the construction sector as a system provider. Following an orientation phase, Zentrum Alpines Bauen (Working Group Building Envelopes and Building Systems) received a multi-phase commission to develop a modular, multifunctional metal façade. The Working Group Energy Systems contributes to the multifunctionality through its expertise.

Project Objectives

A preliminary study analyzed the state of the art and the state of science of modular building systems in Europe.
In the first project phase, the basic system concept was developed, the system was further developed, and initial construction detail solutions were created.
In the second project phase, a prototype will be evaluated at the building-envelope test rig of the Twin²Sim facility. The focus is, on the one hand, on fabrication, modularization, assembly and disassembly processes and, on the other hand, on the medium-term investigation of the façade and installed components with regard to their multiphysics behavior.

Current status / results

System development is complete. System and connection details are available, and the prototype has been designed and its execution planned. Shop drawing has started. Next steps include prototype fabrication, installation, test-rig investigations, and disassembly, followed by dismantling and examination of critical components. Three patent applications are being filed.
