Background

Austria still uses too much land. That is why internal development and densification are becoming increasingly important for creating housing in the future.

Project Objectives

BONANZA builds on the successful predecessor project BONUS, which developed a dedicated densification consulting service for owners of single-family and two-family homes and successfully piloted it in the Salzburg and Feldkirch regions. The goal is to activate unused building potential in the existing building stock, create additional resource-efficient and socially compatible living space, and at the same time avoid further land sealing.

In BONANZA, the BONUS consulting service is evaluated, further developed, and expanded to include a focus on climate change adaptation. At the same time, process workflows are standardized and a functional monitoring system is integrated. This will make it possible to measure implementation success and the effectiveness of measures initiated through the consulting service in the future.

To support transferring the BONUS consulting service to additional municipalities, a Co-Creation format is developed. For an integrated, compact overview of the data innovations developed at the municipal level and applied within the Co-Creation format, an interactive web-based information tool is being developed. This tool illustrates the benefits of the advisory service for local challenges and supports municipalities in achieving their climate and energy efficiency goals. With these innovations, BONANZA lays the foundation for broad application of the BONUS consulting service. The results are presented at various events to build awareness and promote long-term implementation.

Results

Within the project, data innovations and spatial indicators were developed at both parcel and district level and integrated into the consultancy fact sheet for the BONUS consulting service and into a web-based information tool. In addition, small action cards on climate change adaptation and biodiversity were developed to support the consulting service. A Co-Creation format for engaging and activating additional municipalities to implement the consulting service was developed, as was a monitoring system for analyzing the impacts of the BONUS consulting service. In total, 42 advisory consultations were carried out as part of the project.
