Evidence-Based Planning Foundations in the Context of Microtransit

Fundamentals for the use of micro-public transport in the province of Salzburg

Background

Microtransit systems (demand-responsive transport) can make an important contribution to mobility services, especially in rural areas. As part of the Mobility Lab Policy Lab, iSPACE plus was commissioned to test innovative approaches and tools to address specific planning and policy challenges. The focus was on developing and evaluating evidence-based planning foundations. In close coordination with relevant stakeholders and incorporating current concepts, projects, and master plans, the target vision for forward-looking foundations in the area of microtransit was defined in more concrete terms.

Project Objectives

The project aimed to create evidence-based planning foundations for the use of microtransit in the State of Salzburg, with a particular focus on the interactions between settlement development and mobility. By spatially and quantitatively delineating relevant settlement areas and classifying settlement and residential structures through GIS-based analyses, including those based on methods developed at the Zentrum Alpines Bauen, targeted measures were derived to close gaps in public transit service. In the pilot area of the Gastein Valley, settlement types and mobility-relevant indicators were analyzed in order to position microtransit as a flexible feeder service to the existing public transport network. The goal is to improve accessibility, strengthen sustainable modes of travel, and promote sustainable, mobility-oriented settlement development.
