Background

Rising population numbers and limited building land in metropolitan areas, including in suburban-rural regions, are increasingly leading to a shortage of affordable housing. As a result, many people move to lower-cost surrounding areas. This trend intensifies urban sprawl and leads to longer commutes as well as higher traffic volumes.

A promising approach is to integrate innovative housing models such as transitional housing into suburban-rural regions. This form of housing, previously mainly found in cities, offers needs-based and time-limited housing solutions, ideal for people who need flexible accommodation for a specific phase of life.

Project Objectives

The aim of the project was to promote resource- and cost-efficient, low-traffic settlement and district development and to reset transport priorities in favor of the sustainable transport modes. The focus was on transferring innovative housing concepts that have so far been used primarily in urban settings, such as transitional housing, to suburban-rural municipalities, combined with needs-based, multimodal mobility solutions. For this purpose, a systematized solution approach tailored specifically to these regions was developed in order to embed new housing and mobility models, in an integrated way, into proactive and sustainable settlement development.

Results

The result is the spatially transferable WohnMOBIL kit with practical recommendations for action. Seine Bausteine „Innovative Wohnlösungen“ und „Innovative Mobilitätslösungen“ ermöglichen die passgenaue Ableitung von Mobilitätsangeboten, die optimal auf die jeweilige Wohnform abgestimmt sind.
